In the 19th century, craftsmen who made hats were known to be excitable and irrational, as well as to tremble with palsy and mix up their words. Such behavior gave rise to the familiar expression 'X'. The disorder, called 'Y' shakes, was caused by chronic mercury poisoning from the solution used to treat the felt. Attacking the central nervous system, the toxin led to behavioral symptoms.

'X' is a phrase in the field of computer science or information and communication technology. It is used primarily to call attention to the fact that computers will unquestioningly process the most nonsensical of input data and produce nonsensical output. It was most popular in the early days of computing, but applies even more today, when powerful computers can spew out mountains of erroneous information in a short time. The actual term 'X', coined as a teaching mantra by George Fuechsel, an IBM 305 RAMAC technician/instructor in New York, was soon contracted to the acronym ___.

The word 'X' dates from a late 19th/early 20th century American idiomatic phrase meaning "an extraordinary or unusual thing, person, or event; an exceptional example or instance." In time, the term also came to refer to a large lollipop. Farrell, searching for a name for his festival, liked the euphonious quality of the now antiquated term upon hearing it in a Three Stooges short film. Paying homage to the term's double meaning, a character in the festival's original logo holds one of the lollipops.

'X' generally refers to a period of adolescence for some members of the Amish, a subsect of the Anabaptist Christian movement, that begins around the age of sixteen and ends when a youth chooses baptism within the Amish church or instead leaves the community. Not all Amish use this term (it does not occur in Hostetler's extended discussion of adolescence), but in sects that do, Amish elders generally view this as a time for courtship and finding a spouse. 'X', literally "running around" in Pennsylvania German, is a contraction of __1__, an adverb meaning "around" and the verb __2__, meaning "to run" or "to skip". The word 'X' is closely related to the standard German word herumspringen for 'jumping around'. 'X' is the subject of the film documentary 'Devil's Playground', which was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary as well as three Emmy Awards.

The video consists of clips of Obama speaking the words of 'Z's song. A follow-up video shows Senator John McCain being 'Y'ed at the Republican National Convention, though it never happened; the 'Y' image was displayed on the giant blue sky background that was behind John McCain during parts of his speech, and the video was pieced together from footage of the event. 'X's inspirations for the character included a bully from his school during his youth, a homeless man who had frightened him when he was eleven, and the 1970s pop song "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright. In an interview, he says that (after hearing some noise): "When I looked down there was a man very much like 'Y' walking along the sidewalk. He must have sensed that someone was looking at him and stopped and looked right into my face. He scared the living daylights out of me, so I jumped back into the shadows. I waited and waited to hear him walk away. Finally I thought he must have gone, so I stepped back to the window. The guy was not only still looking at me but he thrust his head forward as if to say, 'Yes, I'm still looking at you.' The man walked towards the apartment building's entrance. I ran through the apartment to our front door as he was walking into our building on the lower floor. I heard him starting up the stairs. My brother, who is ten years older than me, got a baseball bat and went out to the corridor but he was gone."

Charles Arthur 'Y' got his start in crime at the age 18 when he stole $3.50 in pennies from a local post office, according to an issue of Time magazine, published 22 October 1922. Three years later he was arrested for a payroll robbery, September 16, 1925, in St. Louis, Missouri and served five years in prison. When paroled, 'Y' vowed that he would never see the inside of another prison. Entering into partnerships with more established criminals in the Kansas City underworld, he committed a series of bank robberies over the next several years; it was during this period that he earned the nickname 'X'. When the payroll master at one robbery first described the three perpetrators to the police, he referred to 'Y' as "a 'X' with apple cheeks". From then on he is known as 'XY'. 'XY' was also one of the prime suspects in the Kansas city massacre though he vehemently denied any involvement in it.

'X's criminal modus operandi is so deeply ingrained into his personality that he is virtually powerless to stop himself from acting it out. He cannot simply kill his opponents when he has the upper hand, he has to put them in a deathtrap to see if he can devise a life and death intellectual challenge that the person cannot solve and escape. 'X's compulsion is quite flexible, allowing him to commit any crime as long as he can describe it in a ______.
Some writers have suggested that the 'X's compulsion stems from parental abuse that he endured as a child. After 'X' got high scores on some important tests in school, his father, unable to grasp the fact that his son was brilliant and believing he had cheated, beat him out of envy. This, in theory, left him with a strong internal desire to tell the truth, and prove his innocence. This desire manifests itself in the form of his obsession with ______. Other writers have suggested that his madness, as well as his descent into crime in general, have roots in a yearning to rise above the anonymity that he possessed in his youth.

'X' is an American film studio and distributor which focuses on producing low-budget, usually direct-to-video productions. The studio is best known for producing titles capitalizing on productions by major studios. These titles have been dubbed "mockbusters" by the press. 'X' was founded by former Village Roadshow executives David Rimawi, Sherri Strain, and director David Michael Latt in 1997. 'X' became known in 2007 when similarities between the distributor's titles and those of major studios were reported. For example, the film Transmorphers, bears a number of similarities to the film Transformers, which was released theatrically two days after the release of Transmorphers. According to Latt, "I'm not trying to dupe anybody. I'm just trying to get my films watched. Other people do tie-ins all the time; they’re just better at being subtle about it. Another studio might make a giant robot movie that ties into the Transformers release and call it Robot Wars. We’ll call ours Transmorphers." In 2008, 20th Century Fox threatened legal action against 'X' over The Day the Earth Stopped, a film capitalizing on The Day the Earth Stood Still. The production company works currently on Titanic 2, which is slated for a late-2010 release.

The original story of 'X' is a Middle-Eastern folk tale. Although 'X' is a Middle-Eastern tale, the story is set in China, and 'X' is explicitly Chinese. However, the "China" of the story is an Islamic country, where most people are Muslims; there is a Jewish merchant who buys 'X's wares (and incidentally cheats him), but there is no mention of Buddhists or Confucians. Everybody in this country bears an Arabic name and its monarch seems much more like a Muslim ruler than a Chinese emperor. Some commentators believe that this suggests that the story might be set in Turkestan (encompassing Central Asia and the Chinese province of Xinjiang).

Though Schafer and others on the Double Fine team had vast knowledge of specific types of metal, Ridgway turned to a used-CD store owner named Allan from Aquarius Records who had "encyclopedic knowledge" of the entire genre, and who provided the team with sample CDs to help them discover some of the more obscure metal bands.
