'X' was named after the 1948 Muddy Waters song of the same name. 'X' was known for it's political coverage beginning in the 1970's with the enigmatic and controversial gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. 'X' changed its format in the 1990s to appeal to younger people, often focusing on young television or film actors and pop music. This led to criticism that 'X' was emphasizing style over substance. In recent years, 'X' has resumed its traditional mix of content, including in-depth political stories.

'X' was a close friend of J. R. R. Tolkien, and both authors were leading figures in the English faculty at Oxford University and in the informal Oxford literary group known as the "Inklings". According to his memoir Surprised by Joy, 'X' had been baptised in the Church of Ireland at birth, but fell away from his faith during his adolescence. Owing to the influence of Tolkien and other friends, at the age of 32,'X' returned to Christianity, becoming "a very ordinary layman of the Church of England". His conversion had a profound effect on his work, and his wartime radio broadcasts on the subject of Christianity brought him wide acclaim. 'X' also died on the same day as John.F.Kennedy.

The October 30 broadcast,of 'X', brought 'Y' notoriety and instant fame on both a national and international level. The fortuitous mixture of news bulletin format with the between-breaks dial spinning habits of listeners from the rival and far more popular Edgar Bergen/Charlie McCarthy program, created widespread confusion among late tuners. Panic spread among many listeners who believed the news reports of an actual martial invasion. The resulting panic was duly reported around the world and disparagingly mentioned by Adolf Hitler in a public speech a few months later.

'X' was born out of an online multi-player game that seemed to sum up everything the Web 2.0 people were trying to do. Rather than bashing mythical creatures, players in Game Neverending, as it was called, had to cooperate to solve puzzles. There was to be no winner. The game had its fans, but it was the introduction of an application that allowed users to share ______ that really took off. After Game Neverending failed to live up to its name, it was that application that became 'X' and the focus of the attentions of Butterfield, the possessor of a first in philosophy from Cambridge, and his wife.
