'X' was involved in an unsavoury incident with Rudi Völler when West Germany played the Netherlands in the 1990 World Cup. 'X' was booked for a bad tackle on Völler. As 'X' took up position for the free kick he spat in Völler's hair. Völler complained to the referee and was booked as well. From the resulting free kick, Völler then dived, according to himself to avoid a collision with Dutch keeper Hans van Breukelen, while others, notably 'X', saw it as a dive in hopes for a penalty. 'X' again confronted Völler by twisting his ear and stamping on his foot. Both Völler and 'X' were sent off but 'X' again spat in Völler's hair as they left the pitch. The German press nicknamed him "Llama" for his spitting.

'X' was born in The Bronx, New York, to Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants, from Pinsk, Belarus. In 1967,'X' opened a necktie store where he also sold ties of his own design, under the label 'Y'. 'X' released 'Y's famous short sleeve mesh shirt with the 'Y' logo in 1972. It came out in 24 colors and soon became a classic. He also gained recognition for his design after he was contracted to provide clothing styles for the movie The Great Gatsby.

When 'X' was 16 his brother changed their last name to avoid the unfortunate obscenity reference. “My given name has the word shit in it,” 'X' told Oprah Winfrey. “When I was a kid, the other kids would make a lot of fun of me. It was a tough name. That's why I decided to change it. Then people said, "Did you change your name because you don't want to be Jewish?" I said, "Absolutely not. That's not what it's about."
