'X' was first manufactured by pharmacist Caleb Bradham in New Bern, North Carolina as 'Brad's drink'. It was named 'X' possibly due to the digestive enzyme and nuts used in the recipe. Bradham sought to create a drink that was delicious and would aid in digestion and boost energy. Automobile race pioneer Barney Oldfield was the first celebrity to endorse 'X', describing it as "A bully drink...refreshing, invigorating, a fine bracer before a race". The mascot of 'X' was also featured in the Sega Saturn version of the game Fighting Vipers.
