'X'(born 1 February 1956) is a British adventurer and author. Born in Whitton, London, after a tumultuous and free spirited adolescence, in which she replaced formal education with travel and adventure, she joined forces with writer Gerald Kingsland, as an experiment in isolation, for a year on the isolated island of Tuin, in the Torres Strait between New Guinea and Australia. On her return in 1983, she had her experiences published in the book 'Y'. Prior to writing 'Y', she had been employed as a charlady, monkey keeper, waitress, stone mason's mate, life model, pastry cook, and concierge. She had first run away from school at twelve and had no full-time schooling after her thirteenth birthday. Due to the interest raised by her first book she wrote about her life before 'Y' in the book 'Z'.

Hugh Atkin, an Australian lawyer and notable producer of Internet viral videos, created a popular YouTube parody video of the 'X' meme involving U.S. President Barack Obama, then the 2008 presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, entitled 'Y' that has been watched about 6 million times since its release. The video consists of clips of Obama speaking the words of 'Z's song. A follow-up video shows Senator John McCain being 'Y'ed at the Republican National Convention, though it never happened; the 'Y' image was displayed on the giant blue sky background that was behind John McCain during parts of his speech, and the video was pieced together from footage of the event. The video ends with what looks like the delegation cheering while chanting Obama's name. This version won the Favorite User Generated Video award at the 35th People's Choice Awards.

'X' was the reigning F1 champion when he moved over to the CART Indy Car World Series, being the first person to win the CART title in his debut season, making him the only person in history to hold both titles simultaneously. His career in Formula One spanned 15 seasons, with his final two full seasons of top-level racing being spent in the CART series. 'X' remains the most successful British Formula One driver of all time in terms of race wins with 31 victories, and is fourth overall on the Formula One race winners list behind Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost, and Ayrton Senna. 'X' was rated in the top 10 Formula One drivers of all time by longtime Formula One commentator Murray Walker. 'X' is the current President of one of the UK's largest Youth Work Charities, UK Youth.

'X' is a Dutch doctor with a wide range of interests and accomplishments, partly attested by the string of letters that follows his name: "M.D., D.Ph., D.Litt., etc." 'X' however uses German words instead of Dutch, such as "mein Gott" and "toll", which translate in English to "my God" and "great" respectively. 'X' shares the same first name as the 'X's creator. In the Marvel Comics miniseries 'X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula', 'X' joins forces with the immortal mutant Apocalypse and his worshipers, Clan Akkaba, in order to destroy Dracula, their common enemy. In a movie adaptation the first name of 'X' was changed to Gabriel because 'Universal' wanted copyright privelages to 'X'.
