'X's inspirations for the character included a bully from his school during his youth, a homeless man who had frightened him when he was eleven, and the 1970s pop song "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright. In an interview, he says that (after hearing some noise): "When I looked down there was a man very much like 'Y' walking along the sidewalk. He must have sensed that someone was looking at him and stopped and looked right into my face. He scared the living daylights out of me, so I jumped back into the shadows. I waited and waited to hear him walk away. Finally I thought he must have gone, so I stepped back to the window. The guy was not only still looking at me but he thrust his head forward as if to say, 'Yes, I'm still looking at you.' The man walked towards the apartment building's entrance. I ran through the apartment to our front door as he was walking into our building on the lower floor. I heard him starting up the stairs. My brother, who is ten years older than me, got a baseball bat and went out to the corridor but he was gone."

The events of ‘X’ take place in the 23rd century, an age when Earthlings have colonized both Mars and the Moon. The Martian colony is a harsh environment where, like old Australia, all of the settlers are convicts. Given a choice between prison on Earth and helping to build and maintain the colony on Mars, they chose the latter... and soon came to realize they'd chosen poorly. The Martian colony is run by the military dictator Hazzard Pascha, who tests every settler to decide whether they should be part of the oppressive military or live a life of hard labor as a Worker.

Charles Arthur 'Y' got his start in crime at the age 18 when he stole $3.50 in pennies from a local post office, according to an issue of Time magazine, published 22 October 1922. Three years later he was arrested for a payroll robbery, September 16, 1925, in St. Louis, Missouri and served five years in prison. When paroled, 'Y' vowed that he would never see the inside of another prison. Entering into partnerships with more established criminals in the Kansas City underworld, he committed a series of bank robberies over the next several years; it was during this period that he earned the nickname 'X'. When the payroll master at one robbery first described the three perpetrators to the police, he referred to 'Y' as "a 'X' with apple cheeks". From then on he is known as 'XY'. 'XY' was also one of the prime suspects in the Kansas city massacre though he vehemently denied any involvement in it.

At 'X's last Ozzfest performance, on August 20, 2005 at the Hyundai Pavilion at Glen Helen in San Bernardino, California, several negative events took place. During the first song, several members of the crowd, brought on by Sharon Osbourne, bombarded 'X' with eggs, bottle caps and ice. During three of 'X's songs, the P.A. system was switched off, cutting power to vocalist 'Y's microphone and then to all the band's instruments. During the concert, 'Y' can be heard accusing the festival's organizers of deliberately cutting off the band's power. On 'X’s departure, Sharon Osbourne came on stage to make a few statements, telling the audience that she "absolutely loved X" but thought that the lead singer Y was a prick."

'X's criminal modus operandi is so deeply ingrained into his personality that he is virtually powerless to stop himself from acting it out. He cannot simply kill his opponents when he has the upper hand, he has to put them in a deathtrap to see if he can devise a life and death intellectual challenge that the person cannot solve and escape. 'X's compulsion is quite flexible, allowing him to commit any crime as long as he can describe it in a ______.

Some writers have suggested that the 'X's compulsion stems from parental abuse that he endured as a child. After 'X' got high scores on some important tests in school, his father, unable to grasp the fact that his son was brilliant and believing he had cheated, beat him out of envy. This, in theory, left him with a strong internal desire to tell the truth, and prove his innocence. This desire manifests itself in the form of his obsession with ______. Other writers have suggested that his madness, as well as his descent into crime in general, have roots in a yearning to rise above the anonymity that he possessed in his youth.

'X' is an American film studio and distributor which focuses on producing low-budget, usually direct-to-video productions. The studio is best known for producing titles capitalizing on productions by major studios. These titles have been dubbed "mockbusters" by the press. 'X' was founded by former Village Roadshow executives David Rimawi, Sherri Strain, and director David Michael Latt in 1997. 'X' became known in 2007 when similarities between the distributor's titles and those of major studios were reported. For example, the film Transmorphers, bears a number of similarities to the film Transformers, which was released theatrically two days after the release of Transmorphers. According to Latt, "I'm not trying to dupe anybody. I'm just trying to get my films watched. Other people do tie-ins all the time; they’re just better at being subtle about it. Another studio might make a giant robot movie that ties into the Transformers release and call it Robot Wars. We’ll call ours Transmorphers." In 2008, 20th Century Fox threatened legal action against 'X' over The Day the Earth Stopped, a film capitalizing on The Day the Earth Stood Still. The production company works currently on Titanic 2, which is slated for a late-2010 release.

In 1970, the lead singer of the band sought a new name. "One Percent" and "The Noble Five" were each considered before the group settled on 'X', a mocking tribute to a physical-education teacher at Robert E. Lee High School, ___________, who was notorious for strictly enforcing the school's policy against boys having long hair. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked 'X' #95 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. 'X' features 107 heavy metal tracks from 75 different bands, selected by Schafer and Music Director Emily Ridgway as listed below, each song being a "completely sincere choice" by Schafer and Ridgway, with the whole track list being "designed to be loved by Metal fans." Schafer sought to include songs from most main sub-genres of metal, including classic heavy metal, industrial metal, and doom metal, with each faction in the game favoring a specific type. Though Schafer and others on the Double Fine team had vast knowledge of specific types of metal, Ridgway turned to a used-CD store owner named Allan from Aquarius Records who had "encyclopedic knowledge" of the entire genre, and who provided the team with sample CDs to help them discover some of the more obscure metal bands. Schafer also credits 'Y' with some of the music selections for the game.
